A Speed Date with both halves of Skud & Serebii

This past week, Raphaella interviewed both halves of Skud & Serebii. They discussed duo-dynamics, new tracks and milk baths. Needless to say, it’s a joy to listen to both their chat and their tunes.

Hello! Tell us more about your new single coming out on Friday - ‘I Don’t Need Your Time’?

Skud: So, this single was the first thing that we wrote together, I think you can kind of hear that when listening to it because we kind of did it as a half-half thing.

Serebii: We wanted to capture our characters, so we abruptly split the song halfway through.

Also, tell me about that cover art that you released of you two in the milk bath?

Skud: It was kind of a running joke with my flatmate. He said you should just pour some milk on Ceejay [Serebii]. But yeah, I’ve never been in that much milk before.

Serebii: The milk bath photoshoot was hands down the most crack up way to spend a few hours with the crew, plus we got some crazy shots.

Why did you gravitate to a duo rather than a solo venture or larger band? Was it love at first sight?

Serebii: Well... we have a larger band for our live sets, but we really enjoy the chaotic process of weird sounds and naughty beats together. Plus, the logistics behind a band can consume more time than writing a fucking album!

Skud: We wanted to go as a duo simply because we jammed once... [and] like, I couldn’t get that sound by myself. It was something different and kind of fresh.

I really frothed your recent video promo, how did that come about?

Serebii: That vid was all Skud. He’s always had a sweet archive of goodies.

Skud: Yeah, I have a bunch of stuff stowed away, random bits of old footage that I’ve been watching for a while. It’s not necessarily going to be a bigger video. It’s kind of a style we’d like to use going forward... bite sized.

What do you wish you got asked about your music more?

Serebii: When eating a cream donut, what part of your sound best describes arriving at the Jam?

Skud: I really like foley, raw sound, sampling and sound design. It’s kind of nerdy so I get that not a lot of people talk about it.

What are you excited for most in the future?

Serebii: The development of technology, procreation.

Skud: Taking [Skud & Serebii] as far as it can go.

Did you have any epiphanies during lockdown?

Serebii: I went into lockdown without music equipment, so it hindered the process big time. Then I discovered kitchen utensils and my laptop microphone.

Skud: Yes, I think everyone did. As a creative person to get that much free time – it was fucking crazy. If you’ve got that much leisure, you can just explore.

So, you released your first single together ‘Don’t You Feel Lucky’ in early December and “I Don’t Need Your Time’ comes out next Friday. Are you planning to release music more frequently than in 5-month stints?

Skud: Absolutely! It’s kind of been a fuck around with both of our living situations, but Ceejay’s coming back to Wellington next week.

Serebii: What a roast... we’re releasing an EP!!

Lastly, which term do you personally identify with most, live, love or laugh?

Serebii: Um um um... Love!!

Skud: Uh, laugh. We’ll just leave it at that.
